The four-week period

To receive unemployment benefits abroad, you must have been fully unemployed, available to the labour market and been registered as unemployed at the Jobcenter / Jobnet.dk and resided in Denmark for a period of 4 weeks (28 days). If you’re a citizen of the country you plan to go to, the requirement is only one week.

Please note that all work or sickness of more than 3 days will interrupt the 4-week period and then you need to start from the beginning again. If you take a holiday, your days of holiday will not count towards the 4 weeks. That means that if, for instance, you register as unemployed and take 1 week’s holiday after 1 week of unemployment, then you must be unemployed for 3 weeks after the end of your holiday before you can take benefits with you when you go abroad.

Exemption from the 4-week rule

In some cases, we can grant exemption from the four-week rule.

• If you travel with your spouse who has landed a job abroad or is to begin studies lasting more than 18 months
• If you are going for a job interview abroad
• If you are to start a new job abroad
• If you want to be job searching on the Faroe Islands for three months
